Maia studied Film and Photography at Ryerson University, and in 1984 went on to pursue a career in fashion and commercial photography. In 1991 he made a creative pilgrimage across Europe and North Africa. After settling in Lisbon, he taught at Portugal’s Technical School for Image and Communication for 21 years. In 2008, Maia launched an art journal, DIRECTARTS International, which is now distributed in 98 cities worldwide.
In 2013, Maia returned to Toronto with his family and continued his photographic practice. He continues to be inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s philosophy of creating art with “Individuality, clarity, sincerity and transmission of feelings”. Maia has evolved as an artist, exploring the changing role of technology in photography with the advent of the smartphone; but continues to value these centrals tenets in his creative process.
